a voyage like this particular is a well-refined, highly tuned entity. especially since our means of transport, EMMA, is a citröen campster. this car is set up and meant for a weekend family trip, maybe a week long vacation with your beloved at best. not a year of odyssee into nowhere.
space is an issue. we realized that on the evening of our first day, where we triaged stuff out of our van. we snuck back home to depose of two big cartboard boxes full of stuff. the car was still crammed with stuff we considered necessary for our adventure.
this said, we are still optimizing space, building little supercustommade drawers for any gap that is unused and those drawers have the weirdest forms and shapes, look like spaceships and contain our spices for example.
funny enough, we met a couple from germany (I think the majority of people we met were germans) with a beautifully selfbuilt van.
now their issue was that they had tons of space to store and put away things. but – they had a complicated weight issue and had to take out cupboards and storage space and throw out stuff. everytime the fill up with groceries, they have to make sure not to getting checked by the police for overweight.
I calculated the weight on the standard model, he said, but we have a 4wd. this adds 400 kg and screwed up my planned.
sounds like something of my doing, I thought and spared myself the comment.
eine reise wie diese hier ist eine fein abgestimmte, hochgetunte sache. vor allem, wenn unsere transportmöglichkeit, EMMA, ein citröen campster ist. dieses auto ist gedacht für ein wochenende camping mit der familie, möglicherweise eine woche ferien mit der oder dem geliebten.
nicht für ein jahr odyssee ins nirgendwo.
platz ist ein thema. wir realisierten das am ersten abend unserer reise irgendwo im wallis, wo wir sachen aus dem van raus triagierten. zwei bananenschachteln voller zeugs wurden in einer nacht und nebelaktion zurück nach hause geschmuggelt. der van war immer noch bumsvoll mit dingen, welche wir als essentiell wichtig erachteten.
das gesagt findet man uns immer noch beim optimieren von platz vor. wir bauen superspezialangefertigte schubladen mit seltsamsten formen. diese sehen ein wenig aus wie raumschiffe und sind unsere gewürzschublade, zum beispiel.
lustigerweise trafen wir ein paar aus deutschland (de facto waren die meisten bekanntschaften deutsche vanreisende) mit einem wunderschönen selbstausbau. sie hatten tonnenweise schäftlein und schränke – aber alle leer.
wir können nix zuladen, sagte er, ich hab mich beim ausbau verkalkuliert. wir sind so knapp am maximalgewicht, dass wir nach jedem einkauf hoffen, nicht in eine polizeikontrolle zu geraten.
wie kommt das, fragten wir?
ich habe nicht berücksichtigt, dass wir einen allrad haben und dieser 400kg mehr wiegt als das normale modell, an welches ich mich gewichtsmässig hielt.
klingt nach mir, dachte ich mir und ersparte mir, das zu sagen.
